The Resource Room Welcomes a New Season of Youth Leadership
The Resource Room is proud to welcome our Fit2Lead interns as they begin a new summer season filled with leadership, learning, service, and community impact.
During onboarding and orientation, interns were introduced to the expectations, responsibilities, and purpose behind their summer roles. As they prepare to support students across our summer camp program sites, these young leaders are stepping into an opportunity that goes far beyond a summer job.
They are gaining real experience, building confidence, and learning what it means to lead with responsibility, compassion, and purpose.
About the Fit2Lead Program
Fit2Lead is an award-winning, evidence-based summer and after-school program designed for youth ages 15 to 19. Launched in 2016 by Miami-Dade Parks in partnership with organizations including the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the Miami-Dade Police Department, the program was created to provide meaningful employment, mentorship, and life skills development for young people.
The paid internship program has made a measurable impact in the community, including a reported 30 percent reduction in crime in implementation areas. Today, Fit2Lead is an important part of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s and the Board of County Commissioners’ Peace and Prosperity Plan.
In 2024, Fit2Lead provided employment and mentorship to 700 youth through 13 county departments and 35 community partners.
Building Skills That Last Beyond the Summer
At its core, Fit2Lead is about prevention, opportunity, and empowerment. Community violence is a major public health priority, and programs like Fit2Lead help create positive pathways for youth by offering structure, mentorship, and meaningful work experiences.
Participants gain more than job experience. They also build essential life management skills, including goal setting, budget planning, communication, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and healthy relationship building.
These skills help young people prepare for adulthood while giving them the opportunity to explore future career paths, serve their community, and develop a stronger sense of purpose.
Supporting Students Across Summer Camp Sites
This summer, The Resource Room’s Fit2Lead interns will help support students across our summer camp program sites. Their presence will help create a safe, engaging, and encouraging environment for youth while allowing the interns to practice leadership in real time.
From assisting with daily activities to modeling positive behavior, these interns will play an important role in helping younger students feel supported, seen, and inspired.
A Summer of Leadership, Learning, and Impact
We are excited to see how our Fit2Lead interns grow throughout the summer. Their work represents the power of investing in young people and creating opportunities that help them succeed.
At The Resource Room, we believe that when youth are given the right tools, guidance, and encouragement, they can become leaders who make a lasting difference in their communities.
This summer is only the beginning.
