Reports to: Afterschool Site Leader
Position Overview
The Afterschool Counselor supports students by providing academic assistance, enrichment activities, and social emotional support in a safe and structured environment. Counselors work closely with Site Leaders, parents, and community partners to ensure students are learning, growing, and socializing in positive ways.
This role is ideal for individuals who are caring, dependable, and passionate about working directly with youth.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide students with quality and accurate homework assistance
- Assist with planning and implementing required program components
- Encourage age appropriate learning and positive socialization
- Monitor student health, behavior, and emotional wellbeing and report concerns as needed
- Introduce students to enrichment activities such as art, music, sports, and hobbies
- Collaborate with third party stakeholders to support program quality
- Work with parents to help students progress toward educational and behavioral goals
Qualifications
- One to two years of experience working with youth in a summer camp or afterschool setting preferred
- Current college student pursuing a degree in Sociology, Social Work, Human Services, Education, or related field preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Ability to obtain the required 45 hour childcare license
- Ability to pass a background check
- Understanding of childhood development and youth needs
- Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Valid driver’s license required
